Tell Me About The The Open Notebook Early-Career Fellowship Program For Journalists:

Applications for the 2025 fellowship period are now open, with a deadline of October 31, 2024. The Open Notebook offers a one-year, part-time fellowship for early-career science journalists, made possible through the support of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. Fellows will work remotely, starting on February 24, 2025, and receive a stipend of $6,600 paid in four instalments. This fellowship provides an opportunity to work closely with a mentor to pitch, report, and write articles for The Open Notebook, all while gaining valuable experience as part of the TON editorial team. Throughout the year, fellows will sharpen their journalistic skills and become part of a diverse and supportive community of peers and mentors.

Who can Apply For The Open Notebook Early-Career Fellowship Program For Journalists?

Additionally, applicants are to meet the following criteria:

  • The fellowship is open to early-career science journalists.
  • Applicants from outside the U.S. are welcome to apply.
  • Some training or experience in writing for the general public is necessary.
  • Extensive experience is not necessary, but some is essential.
  • Science journalists or aspiring science journalists must have fewer than three years of regular professional science writing experience.
  • Internships and student work do not count towards the three-year experience limit.
  • Exceptions may be made for applicants with more than three years of experience if some or all of it is not in English.
  • Applications, including writing samples and recommendation letters, must be submitted in English.
  • Translated materials from another language into English are acceptable.

How are Applicants Selected?

The selection criteria are as follows:

  • A strong intention to work primarily as a professional science journalist. (Note: This fellowship is intended for people whose main goal is to do journalism, as opposed to other forms of science communication.)
  • Some training and/or experience writing about science for the general public (it does not have to be extensive)
  • Some understanding of the science journalism profession, the challenges science journalists commonly face, and how you would like to grow as a science journalist
  • Familiarity with The Open Notebook and the types of topics we tend to cover
  • An ability to generate good story ideas suitable for The Open Notebook
  • A commitment to delivering your best work and being conscientious about deadlines
  • Strong writing ability (If English is not your first language, we do consider this and do not expect flawless writing. However, for a successful experience in this fellowship you must have a fairly high level of proficiency in English.)
