A young African woman becomes the first person in her village to attend university after she receives a $328,000 scholarship to MIT.

Justine Akorfa Dagadu, a young African woman, has been awarded a scholarship worth $38,000 to pursue a bachelor’s degree at the esteemed Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States.

Justine, a West African from Ghana, was awarded a full scholarship worth $82,000 a year for four years to attend the esteemed university and pursue a bachelor’s degree in bioengineering and international development.

She celebrated her achievement on Facebook, sharing how she went from living in a low-income neighborhood in Accra, Ghana, to attending a prestigious university.

Furthermore, she said that Agbogbloshie, an impoverished inner-city area of Accra, Ghana, is where she spent the majority of her youth. She is the first of three children. According to Justine, her mother sells regional goods to help the family’s income, while her father is a retired driver.

Even though Justine’s town lacked the conveniences and necessities of a tranquil setting with effective structures and services, she stated that her parents made an effort to give her a top-notch education and a better life than they had.

According to Justine, her parents went above and beyond to foster her development and goals, which motivated her to have a positive influence.

She claimed that her academic studies have been motivated by her desire to address the enormous inequities that are typical in societies similar to her own and to close the gaps these injustices produce.

Justine studied General Science at Keta Senior High School (Ketasco). She discovered throughout her high school years that she was capable of reaching great heights and overcoming the constraints of her surroundings.

However, upon graduating in the top 1% of my class in 2019, she came to the realization that her family’s tight finances might make it hard for her to continue her study. But after being accepted into the 2021 Young Achievers Foundation Ghana (YAF Ghana) Scholars Program, she started to feel optimistic.

Justine was able to realize her full potential and take a step toward her dreams thanks to this program. She was awarded a full scholarship to continue her education in the UK.

According to Justine, she was the first person in her village to enroll in the esteemed Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States for her undergraduate studies.

She sees the accomplishment as a means of fresh starts and an opportunity for unheard-of development—not only for herself, but for all the other kids in her neighborhood and beyond.

Justine expressed her excitement about gaining a deeper comprehension of health and economic development issues in poor nations with her degree. Above all, she aspires to provide youngsters in similar neighborhoods with an enhanced opportunity to succeed in life.

She described being accepted to MIT as a blessing, one that would allow her and every other person or child in her community to feel as though they may finally overcome the obstacles and weight of years of unfavorable life events and reach higher goals.

Justine acknowledged her appreciation to the KETASCO Past Students Association in Ghana and North America, the MIT Alumni in Ghana, and YAF Ghana for all of their help in realizing her dream.
