Reimagining African Narratives is a 6-month photography fellowship fostering responsible collaboration from an African perspective. Through online and in-person workshops, participants receive expert mentorship to advance long-term projects,  challenge traditional documentary formats, and engage a global audience through hands-on editing and publishing sessions.

Who can Apply For The REimagining African Narratives Photography Fellowship 2025?

Also, the application criteria are below:

  • Open to African photographers and/or visual artists using lens-based mediums.
  • Applicants must be within the ages of 18 and above.
  • Proposals are accepted from applicants of any African nationality born and residing on the African continent.
  • Preference will be given to female-identifying individuals.
  • Applicants must submit an application via the provided application page: NEWF Application.
  • Applications may be submitted in English, isiZulu, Kiswahili, French, or Portuguese.
  • Applicants must be available for the full duration of the Fellowship.
  • Applicants must be able to travel to South Africa for workshops and the NEWF Congress 2025.
  • Applicants must be committed to attending both online and in-person sessions.
  • Applicants must possess intermediate to advanced photography skills, with basic knowledge of editing and digital file preparation software.
  • Applicants must have a project in development or ready to be developed over the course of the workshops, including the option for alternative photographic processes.
  • Applicants must provide links to previous work and current projects, including an artist’s statement.
  • Applicants are responsible for obtaining and paying for their own visas and covering home-country transport costs to the airport and back.
  • Only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
  • Selected program participants must sign an agreement prior to official acceptance into the program.
  • The program lasts a minimum of six (6) months.
