Tell Me About The African Peace Building Network (APN) Research Policy Fellowship:

The APN Research Policy Fellowship supports African scholars who have been recipients of an APN IRF fellowship within the past five (5) years. The fellowship enables scholars to seek affiliation with African regional and national policy think tanks, institutions, and advocacy organizations operating in the fields of peacebuilding, security, and development for up to 6 months, offering up to $12,000 to recipients to take leave from their teaching and administrative roles for the period. Funding is intended to cover housing, travel, administrative, and meal costs for the duration of the fellowship.

Who can Apply For The African Peace Building Network (APN) Research Policy Fellowship?

Also, applicants are to meet the following criteria:

  • To be considered eligible, applicants must be former APN IRF fellows of the past five years (2020-2024) and interested in policy-related research.
  • All applicants must be currently residing in an African country. This competition is open to African academics, as well as policy analysts and practitioners.
  • Historically marginalized persons and communities are strongly encouraged to apply, including women, Indigenous people, gender diverse, and persons with disabilities, among others.

What is the Benefit of the African Peace Building Network (APN) Research Policy Fellowship?

Additionally, the fellowship opportunity comes with the following benefits:

  • Fellows are placed in African institutions, think tanks or civil society organizations focused on peacebuilding, security, and development.
  • Grant of up to $12,000
  • They gain firsthand experience by being fully integrated into their host institutions.
  • Fellows learn about policy formulation and implementation processes at national and regional levels.
  • They bridge research and policy by collaborating with practitioners, enhancing their skills in policy design and advocacy.
  • Participants research specific policy issues and engage in discussions to gain practical insights.
  • Fellows build relationships with policymakers and share their research findings with relevant communities.
  • They produce at least one Policy Review Analysis Paper and a peer-reviewed article for a reputable journal.
  • Fellows critically examine existing policies and propose innovative strategies for addressing challenges in peacebuilding and security.

How Long Will the Award Last?

How to Apply:

  • To be considered for the fellowship, applicants must first submit a one-page letter of interest which details the title, duration, and relevance of the proposed project to peacebuilding mechanisms, policies and practices in Africa, by November 8, 2024, 11:59 pm EST  
  • After the review of the letters of interest, shortlisted applicants will be invited to submit the required application materials including the application form, research proposal and bibliography, CV, proposed project timeline, and proposed budget on the OpenWater portal by January 31, 2025, 11:59 pm EST. Reference letters can be submitted separately, but are required by February 5, 2025, 11:59 pm EST.
