University of the West Indies (UWI) Jointly Supervised £3,000 Per Year PhD Scholarship for the 2025/2026 Academic Year
For the 2025/2026 Academic Year, the College of Social Sciences will offer, for the first time, a full scholarship aimed at individuals from the Commonwealth Caribbean who are students, staff, and alumni of the University of the West Indies (UWI). This is to deepen our partnership with UWI and encourage collaborative PGR and staff research. The initiative is part of the Glasgow-Caribbean Centre for Development Research (GCCDR), established in 2019 to support joint research on topics relevant to the Caribbean nations.

The scholarship is designed to strengthen research collaboration between the University of Glasgow and the University of the West Indies (UWI). It provides a full PhD scholarship to individuals from the Commonwealth Caribbean, focusing on topics relevant to Caribbean nations.

- Any field of research within the College of Social Sciences that addresses issues relevant to Caribbean nations.

Who can Apply?
- Students, staff, and alumni of The University of the West Indies (UWI) who are citizens of the Commonwealth Caribbean.
How are Applicants Selected?
- A joint selection panel consisting of representatives from the College of Social Sciences (CoSS) and UWI will evaluate applications. The research project must be designed and supervised in a way that ensures completion within the funded 3-year period.
Which Countries Are Eligible?
- Commonwealth Caribbean countries.
Where will the Award be Taken?
- The University of Glasgow (UofG), with external supervision from UWI. It is not a joint or dual PhD program; the candidate will be fully enrolled at UofG.
How Many Awards?
- One full scholarship for the 2025/2026 academic year.
What is the Benefit of the Award?
- A stipend at the UKRI Stipend level, a 100% tuition fee waiver, access to a Research Training Support Grant (RTSG) of up to £940 per annum, and £3,000 per year to facilitate collaboration between UofG and UWI supervisors.
How Long Will the Award Last?
- 3 years (with an expectation to complete the PhD within this period).

- Supervisors from UofG and UWI should submit project proposals by January 31, 2025, following the guidelines provided by the College of Social Sciences.
