The SA-CERN Program Excellence Bursaries support outstanding South African MSc and PhD students in conducting research connected to the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), the world’s largest particle physics laboratory based in Geneva, Switzerland. This prestigious bursary, administered by NRF-iThemba LABS and backed by the Department of Science & Innovation (DSI), seeks to create a pipeline of highly skilled South African researchers in fields tied to CERN’s ALICE, ATLAS, and ISOLDE experiments. The bursary provides full study support for the 2025 academic year, including funded research trips to CERN to enhance students’ exposure and academic growth.

Who can Apply For The SA-CERN Program Excellence MSc/PhD Bursary Program 2025 For South African Students?
Also, the eligibility criteria include:
- South African citizenship.
- Registration at a South African university for full-time MSc or PhD studies starting in 2025.
- A research project aligned with one of the SA-CERN Programme pillars: ALICE, ATLAS, ISOLDE, THEORY, or Technology Transfer.
- A supervisor who is an SA-CERN member.
- Demonstrated academic excellence with a minimum aggregate of 65% in the previous degree.
