The Leadership & Advocacy for Women in Africa (LAWA) Fellowship Program, established in 1993 at the Georgetown University Law Center, aims to train women’s human rights lawyers from Africa. This prestigious fellowship equips participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to return to their countries and advocate for the advancement of women and girls. Spanning approximately 14 months, the program includes foundational coursework in American law, a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree focusing on international women’s human rights, and the completion of a major graduate thesis. The fellowship encourages commitment to improving women’s rights throughout their careers.

Who can Apply For The Georgetown University Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa (LAWA) Fellowship Program?
In addition, interested applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Must be a womenโs human rights lawyer from Africa.
- Hold an LL.B. or equivalent law degree.
- Preference for candidates currently living and working in Africa and those without a Masterโs degree.
- Candidates should have approximately five to ten years of experience post-law school; those without work experience will not be considered.
- Strong English language skills (both written and oral) are essential.
- Commitment to return to their home country after completing the fellowship.
