The Special Research Fund – Doctoral Scholarships for Candidates from the Global South supports promising PhD students from Global South countries through Ghent University’s “sandwich” scholarship program. This scholarship enables recipients to conduct half of their PhD research at Ghent University (the “North”) and the other half at a university in the Global South (the “South”). Ghent University funds the 24-month portion of the research carried out in Ghent, while applicants must secure full-time funding for the remaining 24 months to be conducted in the Global South.

Who can Apply For The Ghent University Special Research Fund Doctoral Scholarships?
Additionally, the eligibility criteria include:
- Applicants must be from one of the selected Global South countries (refer to the country list).
- Proposals must be jointly submitted by the candidate, a supervisor at Ghent University, and a supervisor at a partner university in the Global South.
- Research fields are unrestricted, with preference for topics relevant to the North-South context.
- Only students seeking a joint PhD degree from Ghent University are eligible; exchange students are not.
- Candidates should be at the early stage of their PhD and have a minimum of 36 months of doctoral research remaining when the fellowship begins (October 1, 2025).
- Ghent University encourages applications from female researchers, allowing a Ghent University supervisor to support two candidates of different genders per call.

- Funding for a 24-month PhD research stay at Ghent University.
- Ghent University provides a bench fee of €310 per month during the research period in Ghent.
- An €8,000 travel budget for operational and travel expenses for both the student and supervisors.
How Long Will the Award Last?
Four-year PhD program, with 24 months of research funded by Ghent University and 24 months to be funded by the partner university in the Global South.
