Tell Me About The CEGA Fellowship Program For African Researchers:

The Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA) is accepting applications for its 2025-2026 Fellowship Program, targeting emerging African researchers from East and West Africa. This prestigious 16-week in-person fellowship will take place at the University of California, Berkeley (available in Fall 2025 and Spring 2026) and at Northwestern University (offered in Spring 2026 only). The fellowship program aims to strengthen skills in quantitative social science research, including impact evaluation. Researchers can choose one of three research tracks: General Development Research, Early Childhood Development, or Youth Livelihoods. Fellows will audit courses, receive mentorship, and expand their research networks to support their academic and professional growth. Applications are due by 5:00 PM GMT on January 17, 2025.

Who can Apply For The CEGA Fellowship Program For African Researchers?

Also, the eligibility criteria include: 

  • Must be fluent in English.
  • Must be from East or West Africa and have completed secondary school education within Africa.
  • Should be an early-career scholar who recently completed a Master’s or Ph.D. (or is currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program) in economics, political science, statistics, epidemiology/public health, education, or another social science discipline.
  • Must hold a current staff or student position with a research institution in East or West Africa that supports policy-relevant, quantitative social science research.

Additional Criteria by Track:

  • Early Childhood Development Track: Priority for candidates from Tanzania, Mozambique, and Kenya focusing on early childhood health, nutrition, security, and early learning.
  • Youth Livelihoods Track: Preference for candidates from Kenya, especially Mombasa, researching youth employment, education, and skills training.

  • Must have a demonstrated knowledge of quantitative research methods and impact evaluation.
  • Commitment to evidence-informed policy.
  • Alignment with career goals and dedication to enhancing Global South research capacity.

  • Personal statement (1 page) explaining motivations, goals, and ability to commit.
  • Curriculum Vitae or Resume, including relevant quantitative coursework.
  • Research proposal (maximum 2 pages) outlining research ideas.
  • Evidence of leave approval or letter of support from a supervisor.
  • Names and contact information for two references.
