The Jemila Abubakar Memorial Essay Competition, organized annually by the Asido Foundation, honours Jemila Abubakar, a mental health advocate and the foundation’s pioneer program manager. This competition invites undergraduates in Nigerian tertiary institutions to share their perspectives on mental health, fostering awareness and reducing stigma. By addressing critical mental health issues, the contest promotes thoughtful dialogue and offers participants recognition and prizes. The 2025 topic is: “Mental Health and Suicide Prevention: Navigating the Challenges Among Nigerian Students.”

• Applicants should be an undergraduate in any Nigerian tertiary institution 
• Applicants must be able to provide proof of studentship
• Applicants must sign the Asido Foundation’s Unashamed pledge (asidofoundation.com/unashamed)

• The essay word count should range from a minimum of 750 and a maximum of 1000 words
• The essay should be in the Microsoft Word Doc format
• You are required to upload a scanned copy of a recent photograph, proof of studentship and a certificate of your unashamed pledge.
• Submitting an AI-generated essay and plagiarism in ANY FORM will lead to automatic disqualification
