Tell Me About The Iowa State University 2025 Borel Global Fellows Program:
The Borel Global Fellows Program, established in 2018 by ISU alumni Jim and Marcia Borel, supports Sub-Saharan African graduate students at Iowa State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. It aims to combat food insecurity and improve livelihoods by training scientists who will lead and work in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Who can Apply For The Iowa State University 2025 Borel Global Fellows Program?
Also, to be considered for the Borel Global Fellows Program, the student must:
- be admitted into a graduate program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
- be a citizen of a Sub-Saharan African country
- commit to completing graduate studies as a means for preparation of a career contributing to food security in Sub-Saharan Africa
- complete the majority of their graduate research in Sub-Saharan Africa
- demonstrate an intention to work and live in Sub-Saharan Africa after completing their graduate studies

What is the Benefit of the Iowa State University 2025 Borel Global Fellows Program?
Additionally, the fellowship benefits include:
- Up to $25,000 per year per student in funding is available to support:
- Graduate student stipends: A combination of a partial stipend and research funding.
- Travel funding is available for the student and advisor for research trips to and from Africa.
How Long Will the Award Last?
Funding duration:
- Up to 30 months for MS students.
- Up to 42 months for PhD students.
How to Apply:
- Applications must be submitted by Iowa State University professors only.
- Graduate students cannot apply directly. Applications are only for graduate students who have already been accepted into a graduate program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
- Cover letters should outline: The major professor’s commitment to providing the remaining required funding (e.g., tuition, fees, and research costs).
- Their commitment to supporting the student’s research in Sub-Saharan Africa.
