What to know about studying in the UK
Some of the oldest colleges and universities in the world, dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries, are located in the United Kingdom (UK). With such a long history, studying in the UK provides access to a world-renowned worldwide center for excellence in research and education in addition to a top-notch education. Every university offers something different, not just in terms of academics but also in terms of professional and cultural aspects.
Exams, assignments, and a mini-thesis are typically used to evaluate master’s degree candidates. You must, however, carry out independent research with the assistance of a supervisor and submit a dissertation for review in order to receive a research-based MA degree. This is sometimes referred to as an MA by research or an MRes degree.
Types of Masters Programs? Taught and research masters
There are two main types of masterโs degrees to choose from, which differ in teaching format:
- A taught masterโs degree can be similar to a bachelorโs degree in that you will have lectures, seminars, and some compulsory modules, e.g., a Master of Arts (MA) or Master of Science (MSc).
- A research masters requires more independent study with very few classes. You may instead be expected to work on a research project with the help of a supervisor. These types of programmes can be a Master of Research (MRes) or Master of Philosophy (MPhil).
Your objectives will ultimately determine whether you choose to pursue a taught or research master’s degree. A taught master’s degree that offers a more practical approach can be more appealing to you if you’re aiming for a certain vocation. On the other hand, you can think about pursuing a research master’s degree if you are pursuing a PhD or wish to work in academia.
