The U.S. South Pacific Scholarship Program (USSP), funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, is a merit-based initiative designed to support students from Pacific Island countries in obtaining Bachelorโ€™s and Masterโ€™s degrees at the University of Hawaiโ€˜i. This program focuses on fields relevant to the development needs of Pacific Island countries while also fostering cross-cultural understanding of the United States. Administered by the East-West Center, the scholarship includes mentoring, potential internships, and participation in community activities like host family programs.

Who can Apply For The US South Pacific Scholarship Program?

Also, the eligibility criteria include:

  • Bachelorโ€™s Scholarship: Applicants must have completed secondary school or equivalent to Form 6 or Grade 12 and may have some undergraduate coursework without a U.S. four-year bachelorโ€™s degree.
  • Masterโ€™s Scholarship: Applicants must hold at least a three-year baccalaureate degree and may require a bridging program before starting the masterโ€™s program.
  • Applicants should have limited recent experience in the United States or opportunities for study outside the Pacific Islands region.
  • Dual citizens, U.S. non-citizen nationals, and U.S. permanent residents are not eligible.
  • Must meet J-1 visa Exchange Visitor Program requirements

How are Applicants Selected?

  • Academic merit and relevance of proposed field of study to Pacific Island development.
  • Limited prior exposure to the U.S. or study opportunities abroad.
  • Recommendations from U.S. embassies and an academic review panel, including Pacific Islands specialists.
