Tell Me About The NIAS Safe Haven Fellowship:

The NIAS Safe Haven Fellowship supports scholars at risk. The NIAS Safe Haven Fellowship is intended for scholars, artists, writers and journalists who are not able to do their work in their current location or circumstances, because of the consequences of conflict or war.

Which Fields are Eligible?

The project proposal must fall within the scope of the humanities and/or social sciences. Artistic and journalistic proposals are also eligible.

Who can Apply for the NIAS Safe Haven Fellowship?

The eligibility criteria include:

  • On the date that the Call closes, the applicant must have at least three years research experience since the date they were awarded a PhD, if they are submitting a scientific proposal;
  • The project proposal must fit within the scope of humanities and/or social sciences;
  • The proposal should be no more than 1000 words; 
  • The proposal should contain a clear description of the project that will be conducted during a stay at NIAS, and a short motivation stating the necessity of the stay at NIAS, please include a description of why you are or were compelled to leave your workplace if this applies;
  • The applicant should submit an updated C.V. of no more than 2 A4;
  • The applicant may not resubmit a project proposal that was previously rejected by 
  • NIAS;
  • The application must be completed correctly and contain all the requested information and required documentation.

How are Applicants Selected?

The evaluation is based on review of the following criteria:

  • A clear (research) topic and (research) question 
  • Relevance of the (research) project: academic, societal, cultural or artistic relevance
  • Identification of the problems involved and methodology
  • Feasibility of the time schedule 
  • Intended (research) output 
  • Added value / necessity of the NIAS environment for the fellow
  • Fellowโ€™s potential contribution to NIAS and its community

Which Countries Are Eligible?

The fellowship is intended for individuals at risk due to war or conflict regardless of nationality. Applicants must not be affiliated with institutions boycotted by the Dutch state.

What is the Benefit of the NIAS Safe Haven Fellowship?

The fellowship benefits include:

  • โ‚ฌ3,500 monthly stipend
  • 5-month residency at NIAS
  • Access to office space, research facilities, and the NIAS academic community
  • Communal lunch
  • Either commuting travel expenses or subsidized accommodation
  • Reimbursement for outward and return travel
  • Letter of invitation (note: visa arrangements are the fellowโ€™s responsibility)

5 months (either Septemberโ€“January or Februaryโ€“June)

Applicants must submit a fully completed application form through the online application module. Their proposal should contain a clear description of the project which will be conducted during a stay at NIAS (max. 1000 words), a short motivation (max. 150 words) stating the necessity of a stay at NIAS, and a description of why you are or were compelled to leave your workplace if this applies.
