Tell Me About The Southern Africa Federal President Horst Köhler Fellowship in Germany:
The Southern African Journalists’ Fellowship Program 2025, supported by the Federal President Horst Köhler Bursary, is an initiative of the International Journalists’ Programs (IJP). It offers up to six young journalists from Southern Africa and five young German journalists the opportunity to work in each other’s countries. The fellowship aims to promote cross-cultural understanding and collaboration by integrating participants into a German newsroom for two months. This immersive program provides firsthand insights into the political, economic, cultural, and social landscapes of the host country.

Who can Apply For The Southern Africa Federal President Horst Köhler Fellowship in Germany?
Also, the eligibility criteria include:
- Applicants must be journalists aged between 25 and 40.
- Candidates must regularly work for a media organization in a Southern African Development Community (SADC) member state or Kenya.
- Strong English language skills are required; knowledge of German is an advantage but not mandatory.

Applicants are also to submit the following:
- A CV with a passport photograph.
- An 800-word essay addressing:
- Why you want to work in Germany.
- Three research topics you wish to pursue during the fellowship.
- Your future role in your home media.
- How you plan to use the bursary.
- A one-page resume detailing your education, work experience, and language proficiency (copies of certificates such as Goethe Institute or TOEFL).
- Two samples of your journalistic work (articles, manuscripts, or links for TV and radio journalists).
- A reference letter from an editor or head of department (freelancers may submit a reference from a senior journalist). The letter must guarantee a leave of absence for the program’s duration.

- A fixed payment of €3,500 to cover most travel, accommodation, and living expenses.
- Opportunity to work in a German newsroom for two months.
- Participation in an introductory conference in Berlin.
- Gain valuable insights into Germany’s political, cultural, economic, and social systems.
