The University of Sussex and Stuart Hall Foundation are partnering to offer a 4-year PhD scholarship for Black British Postgraduate Researchers in Arts and Humanities or Social Sciences.

Tell Me About the Award:

The University of Sussex is working in partnership with the Stuart Hall Foundation (SHF) to offer one 4-year PhD scholarship for the 2025-26 intake to Black British Postgraduate Researchers in Arts and Humanities or in Social Sciences. The scholarship may include one year of Master’s qualification for candidates who do not already hold a Master’s. Inspired by the life and work of Professor Stuart Hall, SHF works collaboratively to forge creative partnerships committed to public education and addressing urgent questions of race and inequality in culture and society.

  • Social Sciences

Eligible schools include:

  • Faculty of Media, Arts, and Humanities
  • School of Global Studies
  • University of Sussex Business School
  • School of Law, Politics, and Sociology
  • School of Education and Social Work

Type:

Postgraduate Research (PhD or 1-year Master’s + 3-year PhD).

Who Can Apply?

  • Black British candidates starting in Autumn 2025.
  • Those who qualify for Home fees.
  • Applicants with research proposals addressing social justice and issues affecting marginalized groups.

How are Applicants Selected?

Selection is based on:

  • Academic background and/or relevant experiential learning.
  • A strong research proposal addressing social justice and marginalization.
  • Panel review by Directors of Doctoral Study in relevant schools.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed, and final selection will be made by the Stuart Hall Foundation.

Which Countries Are Eligible?

  • Open to candidates from a Black British background who qualify for Home fees.

Where Will the Award Be Taken?

The scholarship will be taken at the University of Sussex, United Kingdom.

How Many Awards?

One funded studentship is available for the 2025–26 intake.

What is the Benefit of the Award?

  • Annual maintenance allowance at UKRI levels (currently £19,237).
  • UK PhD fees for 4 years (or 1 year Master’s + 3 years PhD).
  • Up to £3,000 for research and fieldwork costs.
  • Access to Stuart Hall Foundation resources and networks, including the annual gathering of Scholars and Fellows.

How Long Will the Award Last?

The scholarship is for up to 4 years.
