The Patrick Henry History Fellowship, offered by the Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience at Washington College, is a full-time residential fellowship supporting outstanding work on American history and culture. Who can Apply For The Patrick Henry History Fellowship?

In addition, applicants are to meet the following criteria:

  • Open to published writers and established scholars.
  • Applicants must have a significant project in progress, such as a book, film, oral history archive, podcast series, or museum exhibition.
  • Projects should focus on the history or legacy of the U.S. founding era or related ideas, broadly defined.
  • Dissertation projects are not eligible.
  • First-book projects are discouraged unless the applicant has an extensive publication history.
  • Candidates who have completed the majority of their research and are focused on writing are encouraged to apply.

How are Applicants Selected?

  • Relevance and originality of the proposed project to American history and culture.
  • Evidence of ability to complete the project during the fellowship period.
  • Potential impact of the work on national conversations about America’s past and present.
  • Quality and clarity of writing samples and project description.

Required documents:

Applicants are to submit the following:

  • Cover letter.
  • Curriculum vitae (CV), including past publications and contact details of three references.
  • At least one substantial sample of the candidate’s writing (published or unpublished).
  • Short (1-2 paragraph) description of a course the candidate might teach.
  • Brief narrative description of the work-in-progress, its contributions to national conversations, and the candidate’s fellowship year plan.
