Tell Me About The UNIDIR Women in AI Fellowship:

The 2025 Women in AI Fellowship, organized by the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), is a capacity-building initiative aimed at equipping women diplomats with the knowledge, skills, and networks required to engage effectively in multilateral discussions on artificial intelligence (AI) in the context of international peace and security. The program focuses on addressing gender inequalities in international security forums while fostering inclusive and effective policymaking. Through in-depth training, networking opportunities, and targeted exploration, Fellows gain expertise in the policy, legal, and technical aspects of AI, with particular attention to its gendered implications and security applications.

Who can Apply for the UNIDIR Women in AI Fellowship?

Also, applicants must:

  • Be women diplomats at junior to mid-career levels.
  • Be representatives of UN Member States.
  • Have strong written and spoken English skills.
  • Demonstrate an interest in security, technology, and/or gender.

How are Applicants Selected?

Applications will be screened based on the following:

  • Alignment with the eligibility criteria.
  • Quality of the supporting documents, including the letter of interest and recommendation letters.
  • Priority will be given to candidates from developing countries for sponsorship opportunities.

The Fellowship is open to women diplomats representing any of the 193 UN Member States.

Applicants can apply either directly or through their diplomatic representation by emailing the following documents to sectec-unidir@un.org with the subject line “2025 UNIDIR Women in AI Fellowship Application”:

  1. Copy of passport.
  2. Curriculum vitae (maximum two pages).
  3. Two recommendation letters, one of which should be from the applicant’s national government or diplomatic representation to the UN.
  4. A one-page letter of interest outlining the applicant’s experience, interest in the Fellowship areas, and how they plan to use the knowledge gained.
