After his inauguration as the president of the United States of America the second time, AfterSchoolAfrica wishes to remind international students as well as Donald Trump of his promises to offer green cards to anyone graduating from the US.
In his pledge made on June 26, 2024, Donald Trump thinks that to keep outstanding students from Africa, China, and India in the United States, this action is crucial.

Trump expressed his opinions in this passage, saying, “What I want to do and what I will do isโwhen you graduate from a college, I think you should get a Green Card automatically as part of your diploma, a Green Card to be able to stay in this country. And that includes junior colleges too.”
In his reflections on his tenure in office, Mr. Trump emphasized the lost potential brought about by the current immigration laws. He recalled, “stories where people graduated from a top college or a college, and they desperately wanted to stay here; they had a plan for a company, a concept, and they canโt โ they go back to India, they go back to China, they do the same basic company in those places.” He added, “And they become multi-billionaires employing thousands and thousands of people, and it could have been done here.”
He also underlined the significance of granting green cards to international students upon graduation, especially those enrolled in STEM programs in the United States. “Anybody graduates from a college; you go in there for two years or four years. If you graduate, or you get a doctorate degree from a college, you should be able to stay in this country,” Trump said. โWe force the brilliant people, the people that graduate from college, the people that are number one in their class from the best colleges; you have to be able to recruit these people and keep the people.โ
Trump said he was sorry for the COVID-19 pandemic’s delays, which kept him from enacting this policy sooner. “Let me just tell you that itโs so sad when we lose people from Harvard, MIT, and the greatest schools, and lesser schools that are phenomenal also. And what I wanted to do, and I would have done this, but then we had to solve the Covid problem because that came in and, you know, sort of dominated for a little while,โ he said.

What does this mean for international students in the US??
Applications for student visas to the US have increased dramatically; in 2023, a record 140,000 visas were granted to Indian students. As the US embassy in India gets ready for an even greater number of applications in 2025, this tendency is anticipated to continue.
For international students, this might be a game-changer if it is put into practice, giving them the chance to remain and pursue the American Dream! It will eliminate the uncertainty and administrative challenges that come with remaining in the US after graduation. The United States was now able to draw in and keep some of the world’s best minds by providing a simple route to permanent residency.
