Who can Apply For The TWAS-Abdool Karim Award in Biological Sciences for Women Scientists?

To be eligible, ensure you meet the following criteria:

  • Female scientists from Least Developed African countries (as listed below).
  • Nominees must be no older than 45 years of age.
  • Nominees must have lived and worked in the eligible country for at least two years prior to the nomination.
  • Self-nominations and nominations from jury members are not accepted.
  • Fellows of TWAS are not eligible.
  • Nominees can be considered for only one TWAS award per year.

How are Applicants Selected?

  • The nominees are pre-screened by TWAS, and their dossiers are submitted to jury members for evaluation.
  • The final decision is made by Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim, who selects the winner based on the scientific impact and contributions of their work.

  • Nominator and nominee contact details (self-nominations and nominations from jury members are not accepted).
  • Authorization from the nominee to process personal data for the nomination.
  • Suggested citation (15-20 words summarizing the nomineeโ€™s scientific achievements).
  • Supporting statement outlining the nominee’s contributions in Biological Sciences.
  • PhD details, including subject area, year, and awarding institution.
  • CV (maximum 20,000 characters) highlighting academic and scientific achievements.
  • List of 10 most significant publications in an internationally acceptable format.
  • List of all publications uploaded separately.
  • Nomineeโ€™s h-index from Google Scholar and associated citation number.

Which Countries Are Eligible?

The award is open to female scientists from the following African countries:

  • Central Africa: Angola, Chad, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
  • East Africa: Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.
  • West Africa: Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.
  • Southern Africa: Lesotho and Sao Tome and Principe.

The award will be presented by TWAS, which is an international academy based in Trieste, Italy. Specific award events may take place in varying locations.
