The Department of Higher Education and Training’s (DHET) Future Professors Program (FPP) is a structured and intensive development initiative designed to prepare South Africa’s most promising early and mid-career academics for advancement to the rank of professor across various disciplines. This prestigious program accelerates readiness for the professoriate by offering targeted support, training, and mentorship.

Who can Apply?
Also, applicants must:
- Hold a doctorate.
- Be permanently employed in an academic capacity or an equivalent academic appointment.
- Demonstrate evidence of academic achievement signalling advancement toward senior academic ranks.
Additional criteria that may strengthen an application (not mandatory):
- Being a Black or woman scholar.
- Holding positions such as lecturer or senior lecturer.
- Having an NRF rating or equivalent scholarly standing.
How are Applicants Selected?
Applicants are assessed based on their:
- Academic credentials and achievements.
- Evidence of potential to advance to the professoriate.
- Compliance with the outlined eligibility criteria.
An internal selection process at the university level will shortlist a maximum of five nominees for submission to DHET. DHET makes the final selection.
