The McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism is designed to support experienced journalists with grants of up to $15,000 to produce deeply reported enterprise and investigative stories on critical economic, financial, or business issues. This fellowship is open to both freelance and staff journalists, encouraging work across all media formats, including text, audio, photo, and short-form video. The fellowship provides editorial support to help journalists produce high-quality, impactful stories. McGraw Fellows receive guidance from the McGraw Center during the reporting phase and assistance with story placement in established outlets.

Who can Apply for The McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism?

To apply you must meet the following criteria:

  • At least five years of professional experience in journalism.
  • Open to freelance journalists, reporters, and editors currently working at a news organization or journalism non-profit.
  • Journalists from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
  • Journalists do not need to be business reporters; applications are welcomed from those covering various beats such as healthcare, education, and the environment.

How are Applicants Selected?

Applicants are selected based on the quality of their story proposal, including:

  • The significance and impact of the proposed story.
  • A well-researched and focused reporting plan.
  • The applicant’s ability to tackle an in-depth, investigative story.
  • Journalistic samples demonstrating expertise in producing complex stories.
  • Strong background or reporting expertise related to the proposed topic is desirable.

Applicants are also to submit the following documents:

  • A story proposal (no more than three pages) outlining the proposed project.
  • Three samples of previous journalism work that showcase the applicant’s ability to produce in-depth reporting.
  • An up-to-date resume.
  • (For finalists) References from two editors or individuals familiar with the applicant’s work.
  • Budget details will be requested from finalists after application submission.
