The Carbon Sequestration Fellowships 2025, offered by the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, provide MSc and PhD students with a 4-month scientific internship focused on soil organic carbon sequestration. The fellowship aims to develop innovative approaches to enhance carbon storage in tropical soils, specifically by improving the deep-rooting ability of tropical forage grasses and rice genotypes. Fellows will conduct field and laboratory research at the Alliance’s facilities in Palmira, Colombia, or Nairobi, Kenya, working alongside leading scientists. The program is part of the project “Using genetic diversity to capture carbon through deep root systems in tropical soils,” supported by the Bezos Earth Fund.

Who can Apply For The Carbon Sequestration Fellowships 2025?

The Carbon Sequestration Fellowships are open to MSc and PhD students of all nationalities, with a strong emphasis on applicants from Africa and Latin America. Candidates must be currently enrolled in a university program and conducting research related to soil carbon storage or greenhouse gas emissions in agricultural systems.

How are Applicants Selected?

Applicants will be evaluated based on the following four criteria:

  • Overall level of research experience
  • Relevance of MSc or PhD thesis topic (or other research experience) to the Carbon Sequestration Fellowship objectives
  • Clarity on how the fellowship will enhance the applicant’s scientific skills and career development
  • Performance in an English interview, where applicants discuss their selected research objectives for the fellowship

What is the Benefit of the Carbon Sequestration Fellowships 2025?

Additionally, the key benefits of the fellowship include:

  • In the program’s third round, 10 MSc and PhD students will receive funding ranging from USD 10,000 to 12,000 to cover living costs during the internship.
  • Fellows will work on generating original data and enhancing their research skills under the guidance of experienced scientists, contributing directly to their MSc or PhD thesis.
  • The program offers hands-on training and mentorship within active research teams, ensuring fellows are deeply engaged in impactful agricultural research.

How Long Will the Award Last?

The program will last 4 months, running from August 1 to November 28, 2025.
