Tell Me About The Beit Trust Postgraduate Scholarships:

The Beit Trust Postgraduate Scholarships provide funding for master’s degrees at selected universities in the UK and South Africa. Established to support students from Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi, the scholarship focuses on developmental academic disciplines that contribute to the economic and social advancement of these countries. In 2024, the Trust awarded 21 scholarships in partnership with leading universities. The scholarships cover tuition fees, travel costs, maintenance allowances, and other related expenses.

The scholarship supports developmental academic disciplines, including but not limited to:

  • Medicine and Health
  • Engineering
  • Education
  • Economic growth
  • Agriculture
  • Conservation

Applications for MBAs are not considered.

Who can Apply For The Beit Trust Postgraduate Scholarships?

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be nationals of Zambia, Zimbabwe, or Malawi.
  • Be permanent residents in one of these countries.
  • Intend to return to their home country after completing their studies.
  • Hold a first degree with at least a Distinction or Merit (Upper Second Class).
  • Have at least three years of professional work experience relevant to the field of study.
  • Have demonstrated leadership potential and community engagement.
  • Apply only to Beit Partner Universities.

Doctors and veterinarians must have completed 18 months of internship and at least one year of in-country service, preferably with rural practice experience.

How are Applicants Selected?

Applicants are assessed based on:

  • Academic excellence (preference for Upper Second Class or higher).
  • Work experience relevant to the proposed field of study.
  • Leadership potential in their field.
  • Voluntary work and community engagement (optional but valued).
  • Strong references from academic, professional, and character referees.
  • Commitment to returning to Zambia, Zimbabwe, or Malawi after completing their studies.
  • University choice, as only applicants accepted into Beit Partner Universities are eligible.

Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by Beit Trust national scholarship boards in Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi during April each year.

Required Documents:

Applicants must submit the following:

  • Medical Certificate Form signed by a doctor.
  • University offer letter (for UK universities) or a PDF detailing intended applications (for South African universities).
  • Degree certificates and full academic transcripts.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  • Personal statement (250 words on how the degree will benefit their country).
  • Recent photograph (not a passport photo).
  • Copy of a valid passport (must be valid for the entire duration of study).
  • Three references:
    • Academic Reference Form
    • Character Reference Form
    • Employer Reference Form

Which Countries Are Eligible?

Only citizens of Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi are eligible.

Where will the Award be Taken?

  • United Kingdom: Partner universities offer one-year taught master’s programs.
  • South Africa: Partner universities offer two-year taught master’s programs.

What is the Benefit of the Beit Trust Postgraduate Scholarships?

Additionally, the benefits include:

  • Full tuition and academic fees (paid directly to the university).
  • Living allowance (indexed annually for cost of living).
  • Arrival, laptop, and departure allowances.
  • Economy-class travel to and from the university.
  • No allowances for dependents, spouses, or family members.

How Long Will the Award Last?

  • One year for UK master’s programs.
  • Two years for South African master’s programs.

How to Apply:

  • Apply for admission to one or more Beit Partner Universities.
  • Inform the university that you will apply for Beit Trust funding.
  • Once accepted, apply for the scholarship via the Beit Trust online application portal.
  • Upload all required documents with your application.
  • Forward the reference forms to your referees and ensure they submit them directly to Beit Trust.
  • For South African applicants: Apply for the scholarship before receiving an offer and submit university details instead.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by national scholarship boards in April.
