Tell Me About the Newton International Fellowship:

The Newton International Fellowship (NIF) program, jointly run by the British Academy and the Royal Society, is designed to support early-career researchers who are at an early stage in their research careers and wish to conduct research in the UK. The program aims to attract and retain talented international researchers to the UK, providing them with opportunities to gain new skills, knowledge, and perspectives while building long-lasting collaborative relationships. This fellowship allows researchers to pursue innovative and high-quality research while fostering international collaboration. It also provides extensive career development opportunities and the possibility of future alumni funding to continue networking activities with UK-based researchers.

Which Fields Are Eligible: 

The Newton International Fellowship is available to researchers in all fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Applications for the humanities and social sciences should be directed to the British Academy.

Who Can Apply For The Newton International Fellowship?

To be eligible, you must meet the following criteria: 

  • You have a PhD, or will have a PhD by the time the funding starts
  • You have no more than seven years of active full-time postdoctoral experience at the time of application (discounting career breaks, but including teaching experience and/or time spent in industry on research)
  • You are based outside the UK
  • You do not hold UK citizenship
  • You are competent in oral and written English
  • Your research is within the Royal Society’s remit of natural sciences, which includes but is not limited to biological research and biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, and physics. For a full list, please see the breakdown of subject groups and areas supported by the Royal Society. Applications for the humanities and social sciences should be made to the British Academy.

  • Research proposal
  • Supporting documents as outlined in the Royal Society’s guidelines, including proof of academic qualifications.

Which Countries Are Eligible?

  • The fellowship is open to applicants from all countries.
  • Additional funding opportunities are available for applicants from Switzerland (via the International Science Partnerships Fund) and China (through the Royal Society K C Wong International Fellowships).

Where will the Award be Taken?

The fellowship will be carried out at a UK-based institution.
