Tell Me About The Southern Illinois University MSc and PhD Assistantship:
The MS or PhD Assistantship – Evaluation of Novel Approaches for Assessing White-Tailed Deer Density is offered by the Spatial Wildlife Ecology Lab at Southern Illinois University (SIU), Carbondale. The selected student will begin their studies in Fall 2025 under the supervision of Dr. Guillaume Bastille-Rousseau and Dr. Brent Pease. The research focuses on developing, field testing, implementing, and comparing different methods to estimate white-tailed deer density in Illinois. These methods include the use of camera traps, road surveys with forward-looking infrared (FLIR), and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with thermal cameras. The student will also contribute to integrating site-level density estimates into scalable models. This assistantship is in collaboration with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
