Tell Me About The Award:
The Youth Leadership Competition, organized as part of the African Leadership Forum (ALF) 2025, invites young African citizens to share their ideas on leadership and the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Africa. ALF 2025 will be held from 7 – 8 April in Kampala, Uganda, under the leadership of H.E. Dr. Jakaya Kikwete, former President of Tanzania and ALF Patron, and H.E. Hailemariam Desalegn, former Prime Minister of Ethiopia. The theme for the forum is “Realising Sustainable Development Goals in Africa: Progress and Way Forward”.

Who can Apply?
Additionally, the eligibility criteria include:
- Open to African citizens, including those in the diaspora, aged 18 – 25 years.
- Applicants must submit an original essay responding to the question:
If you were an African leader, how would you accelerate the implementation of SDGs on the continent?
- Essays must be between 500 – 700 words, typed in Arial font size 11, single-spaced, with 1-inch (2.54 cm) margins, and submitted in Microsoft Word format.
- A written statement of originality and ownership of intellectual property rights must be submitted along with the essay

- Originality of ideas.
- Creativity in approach.
- Use of language and clarity.
- Relevance to the competition theme.

Additionally, the benefits include:
- The overall winner will receive a grand prize of USD $2,000 and will be invited to read their essay at the ALF Gala Dinner.
- Winners will create posters showcasing their ideas, which will be displayed at the ALF.
- Winners will attend a prize-giving ceremony, attended by senior African leaders from public, private, and third sectors.
- All travel-related expenses (including visa fees, air tickets, and accommodation) for winners residing outside Uganda will be covered by UONGOZI Institute.
