Tell Me About The Marie Curie PhD Scholarships:

The MSCA Industrial Doctoral Network – COCOSO (Co-Construction in the Field of Social Welfare) is a collaborative doctoral research program that brings together six universities and 16 partners from the non-governmental and public sectors in Europe. This initiative aims to advance research on participation and co-construction in social welfare, focusing on embedding democratic and innovative practices in policies and services. The program will recruit 15 PhD candidates who will engage in research on conceptual and practical understandings of participation, overcoming barriers to co-construction, addressing intersectional inequalities, and enhancing digital tools for participation. Each PhD candidate will be jointly supervised by an academic institution and a social sector organization, spending at least 50% of their time working in a non-academic setting. Who can Apply for the Marie Curie PhD Scholarships?

Applicants must meet the following conditions:

  • Must not have a doctoral degree at the time of recruitment.
  • Open to candidates of any nationality.
  • Must be enrolled in a doctoral program during the project.
  • Must spend at least 50% of their time outside academia working with social sector organizations.
  • Must comply with MSCA mobility rules, meaning they must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting organization for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date.

How are Applicants Selected?

Candidates will be selected based on:

  • Relevance of academic background to the PhD topic.
  • Research and professional experience in related fields.
  • Language proficiency, as some positions require specific language skills.
  • Commitment to international mobility and interdisciplinary research.
  • Ability to collaborate with both academic and social sector organizations.

Where will the Award be Taken?

PhD candidates will be placed at one of six universities across Europe and will undertake secondments at partner organizations in different countries, including:

  • Denmark (University of Aalborg)
  • Austria (University of Innsbruck)
  • Portugal (University of Lisbon)
  • Poland (University of Warsaw)
  • Greece (Democritus University of Thrace)
  • France (Université Paris Nanterre)

Each PhD candidate will also work with a social sector partner organization in the same or a different country.

What is the Benefit of the Marie Curie PhD Scholarships?

Also, selected PhD candidates will receive:

  • A living allowance (as per MSCA Doctoral Network regulations).
  • A mobility allowance to support international relocation.
  • Additional allowances for family, long-term leave, and special needs.
  • A structured training program, including:
    • International study blocks every six months in different European countries.
    • Online work package meetings.
    • Individual training opportunities tailored to each researcher.
  • Hands-on research experience in both academic and social sector environments.

Note: MSCA allowances are subject to income tax, social security, and employer contributions according to national laws.

How Long Will the Award Last?

The PhD contracts will run from 1st September 2025 to 31st August 2028 (three years).
