The TESIECS (Towards Enhancing Sustainable and Innovative Environmental Change Solutions) project is a dynamic partnership that brings together prestigious universities across Africa, including the University of Johannesburg, University of Zimbabwe, University of the Western Cape, University of Botswana, and the Namibia University of Science and Technology, with Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam serving as a key technical partner.

Funded by the European Union, TESIECS is dedicated to developing innovative solutions to environmental challenges while promoting sustainability across the continent.

By enabling students and staff to study or collaborate in different African countries, TESIECS aims to foster cross-border partnerships and contribute to the development of environmental thought leaders and sustainability champions across Africa.

Through these mobilities, TESIECS enhances the academic, administrative, and technical capacity of its partners and trains cohorts of postgraduate students who will become the next generation of environmental experts in the region.

Which Fields are Eligible

The TESIECS scholarships are structured to support various levels of academic engagement. These include Degree Seeking MobilityShort-Term Credit Seeking Mobility, and Staff Capacity Development Mobilities, each offering essential financial support to recipients.

1.ย Degree Seeking Mobility Scholarships

This scholarship provides an opportunity for students to enroll in MA, MSc, or PhD programs at one of the TESIECS partner institutions outside of their home country. The scholarship covers essential costs, including:

  • Travel expenses: For moving between countries
  • Accommodation: To ensure comfortable living arrangements during the mobility period
  • Subsistence: Daily living expenses
  • Tuition feesย (if applicable)
  • Research costsย (if relevant)
  • Insurance: To cover health and safety during the program

These scholarships are designed to enhance the educational experience of postgraduate students while equipping them with the skills and knowledge to drive environmental change and sustainability across Africa.

2.ย Short-Term Credit Seeking Mobility Scholarships

For students pursuing MA, MSc, or PhD degrees in their home country, this scholarship allows them to study specific modules or courses at a partner institution outside their home country. The credits earned will count toward their degree, fostering international collaboration and enriching their academic experience with diverse perspectives. Similar to the degree-seeking scholarships, this support covers:

  • Travel, accommodation, and subsistence
  • Tuition feesย for the specific module(s) taken
  • Insuranceย coverage for health and safety

This opportunity is ideal for students who wish to expand their academic networks and gain valuable international exposure.

3.ย Staff Capacity Development Mobilities

TESIECS also offers capacity development scholarships for academic, professional, and technical staff. These scholarships allow staff members to engage in two-to-twelve-week engagements at partner institutions outside their home country. The goal is to enhance staff skills and knowledge through collaboration and exposure to innovative practices in environmental science and sustainability.

The staff capacity development scholarships cover:

  • Travel costs
  • Accommodation
  • Subsistence
  • Insurance

These opportunities aim to foster institutional growth by improving the capacity of administrative and technical staff, making them more effective contributors to sustainable environmental solutions.

4. Traineeships or InternshipsPart-time job opportunities for students

TESIECS also encourages registered students at any level to apply for traineeships or internships at partner institutions. These opportunities provide hands-on experience, further enriching the academic journey while contributing to professional development in environmental sustainability.

Who can Apply?

TESIECS is open to a diverse pool of applicants, including:

  • Postgraduate Students (MA, MSc, and PhD): Applicants must meet the entry requirements of the relevant institution. For degree-seeking and credit-seeking students, applicants must be enrolled in an appropriate program at their home institution.
  • Staff Members: Permanent academic, administrative, or technical staff at African institutions are eligible to apply for the capacity development scholarships.
