After multiple highly successful cycles of the Global Citizen Scholarship Program, the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens (BKMC) is proud to announce another call for applications for what will be the 8th round of our Global Citizen Scholarship to empower young African global citizens who are passionate about taking action for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The GC Scholarship is a fully virtual scholarship program that empowers young African change-makers to address one or more of the SDGs in their community by proposing and implementing a localized SDG Micro-Project whilst also benefitting from a summer school as well as peer-to-peer mentoring and various expert trainings and workshops on specific topics.

Tell Me About The Award:

The Global Citizen Scholarship, organized by the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens (BKMC), aims to empower young African leaders who are passionate about addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This fully virtual program equips participants with the skills, knowledge, and funding to implement SDG Micro-Projects in their communities. Scholars will engage in expert workshops, peer mentoring, and a summer school at Management Center Innsbruck (MCI) University.

Which Fields are Eligible?

The scholarship is open to individuals from all academic fields, as long as their work and SDG Micro-Project align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Who can Apply?

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a citizen of an African country.
  • Be between 20 โ€“ 35 years old at the time of application.
  • Have completed at least a Masterโ€™s degree (or, in exceptional cases, the first year of a Masterโ€™s program).
  • Demonstrate strong dedication to the SDGs and global citizenship.
  • Have a minimum English level of B2 (European Standards).

How are Applicants Selected?

The selection process considers:

  • Demonstrated commitment to the SDGs and global impact.
  • Leadership potential and community engagement.
  • Strength of the SDG Micro-Project proposal.
  • Academic and professional background.
  • English proficiency (minimum level B2).

Which Countries Are Eligible?

All African countries.

Where will the Award be Taken?

  • The scholarship is fully virtual, with selected participants benefiting from online training, mentorship, and workshops.
  • Scholars will also attend a fully funded two-week summer school at Management Center Innsbruck (MCI) University, Austria.

How Many Awards?

A total of 17 scholars will be selected: 14 from Africa and 3 from MCI University.

How Long Will the Award Last?

The program runs for 8-9 months, starting in April 2025.
