Tell Me About The German Catholic KAAD Scholarship:
(The KAAD (Katholischer Akademischer Ausländer-Dienst) scholarships support talented students from developing and emerging countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The program provides financial assistance, academic mentoring, and a strong focus on reintegration into home regions after graduation. KAAD offers three scholarship programs:
Scholarship Program 1: Supports postgraduate studies and research stays in Germany, In-country Master’s studies, and Third-country Master’s programs.
Scholarship Program 2: Assists students from the Global South already studying in Germany.
Eastern Europe Program: Focuses on Master’s and PhD studies, along with short-term research stays in Germany
Who can Apply for the German Catholic KAAD Scholarship?
Also, the eligibility criteria include:
Must come from and currently reside in a developing or emerging country in Africa, Asia, Latin America, or the Middle East.
Must hold a university degree and have professional experience in their home country.
Intend to pursue a Master’s degree, PhD, postdoctoral research, or a short-term research stay in Germany.
Should be of Catholic faith (or belong to a Christian denomination, especially for applicants from the Near and Middle East). Applicants from other religions may be supported if proposed by Catholic partners with a demonstrable commitment to interreligious dialogue.
Must have at least B1-level German language skills (A2 for English-language programs).
How are Applicants Selected?
Strong academic performance and research potential.
Studies or research should be geared towards reintegration into the home region (otherwise, the scholarship is considered a loan).
Demonstrated religious and social commitment or willingness to engage in interreligious dialogue.
German language proficiency (B1 for most programs; A2 for English-language courses).
Which Countries Are Eligible?
The eligible countries include:
Africa: Ghana, Kenya, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe.
Asia: Myanmar (Third-country scholarships in Thailand).
Latin America: Peru, Guatemala.
Near & Middle East: Jordan, Lebanon (including scholarships for Syrian and Iraqi refugees).
