The In-Region Scholarship Programme for Sub-Saharan Africa, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and administered by DAAD, supports PhD candidates in Development Studies at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). It aims to strengthen research and academic capacities in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Graduates from Sub-Saharan Africa with a Master’s degree who:
- Hold a two-year Master’s degree with above-average academic results (at least Second Class/Upper Division or equivalent).

- Completed their last university degree within the past six years.
- Are nationals or permanent residents of a Sub-Saharan African country (excluding South African nationals).

- Study and research allowance (€920 per year).

- Travel allowance (for In-Region candidates, covered twice – at the start and end of the scholarship).
- Health insurance coverage (for In-Region candidates only).
- Opportunity for a short-term research stay in Germany (3 to 6 months, subject to funding availability).
