The Eliza Moore Fellowship for Artistic Excellence is an annual award for one early-career artist exploring themes of plants, gardens, or landscapes. Open to visual artists, writers, dancers, and musicians, the award includes a $10,000 grant and a 2-5 week residency at Oak Spring Garden Foundation (OSGF). The Fellowship allows the artist to engage with staff, explore the 700-acre landscape, and access OSGFโ€™s rare book library. The program encourages collaboration and learning through communal meals, optional activities, and field trips. At the end of the stay, Fellows may give a 20-30 minute presentation.

  • The fellowship is open to early-career artists who are not enrolled in an undergraduate degree program in 2026.
  • Eligible applicants should have some recognition, such as exhibitions, performances, or publications, but not an extensive career.
  • Established artists with significant solo exhibitions or a high number of publications are not eligible.
  • Applicants must demonstrate a dedication to their artistic practice.

How are Applicants Selected?

 Applicants are selected through a multi-round review process by OSGF staff, alumni, and external jurors. Selection is based on the relevance of the applicantโ€™s work to OSGFโ€™s mission, the potential of the applicant, and the quality of their work samples.

Required documents:

Applicants are to submit the following: 

  • Resume/Curriculum Vitae (not exceeding two pages)
  • 200-300 word statement on artistic practice
  • 200-300 word statement on how the applicantโ€™s work aligns with the OSGF mission
  • Work samples:
    • Visual artists: 5-10 images (include dimensions, year, medium, and title for each)
    • Writers (creative non-fiction, fiction, essays): 7-10 pages demonstrating current interests
    • Time-based artists (filmmakers, musicians, dancers): 10 minutes of work samples
    • Poets and playwrights: 7-10 pages of poetry or scripts in standard formatting
