Tell me About the German Government Wascal Masters Scholarship: 

The German Government, in partnership with the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL), offers the WASCAL Scholarship to eligible African students. This fully funded opportunity allows students to pursue a masterโ€™s degree in Energy and Green Hydrogen across selected universities in West Africa, with research and academic exchange opportunities in Germany. The program is designed to train the next generation of experts in renewable energy and green hydrogen technology, equipping them with the skills to address energy challenges and climate adaptation in the region.

Which fields of study are eligible?

The following fields of study:

  • Master Programme in Economics/ Policies/ Infrastructures and Green Hydrogen Technology
  • Master Programme in Bioenergy/Biofuels and Green Hydrogen Technology
  • Master Programme in Photovoltaic and System Analysis for Green Hydrogen Technologies, Universitรฉ Abdou Moumouni
  • Master Programme in Natural Resources, Biofuel Green Hydrogen Production, Water Resources and Tech

Who can apply for the German Government Wascal Masters Scholarship? 

Applicants must:

  • Be citizens of one of the 15 ECOWAS countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Cรดte dโ€™Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.
  • Hold a BSc degree (Second Class Upper Division) or equivalent in a relevant field.
  • Have at least an intermediate level in English language proficiency.
  • Other ECOWAS member country applicants may be admitted as self-funded students based on availability.

How are applicants selected?

Candidates will be assessed based on:

  • Academic qualifications and relevance of their degree.
  • Strength of their motivation letter.
  • Recommendations from academic or professional referees.
  • Demonstrated interest in renewable energy and green hydrogen technologies.

Required Documents:

Applicants must submit:

  • Completed application form.
  • Certified copies of academic transcripts and university degree certificate.
  • Curriculum Vitae.
  • WASSCE or SSCE Certificate (for Anglophone countries).
  • Two recommendation letters from professors or researchers.
  • Copy of identity document.
  • Copy of passport photo page.
  • Motivation letter (max. 2 pages).
  • Proof of English proficiency or a self-assessment statement.
  • Proof of professional experience (if applicable).
  • Written commitment to pay a registration fee of โ‚ฌ30 if admitted.

The following countries are eligible: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Cรดte dโ€™Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.

The masterโ€™s programs will be hosted at partner universities in West Africa, with research visits to Germany.

Recipients will receive:

  • Monthly stipend of โ‚ฌ400.
  • Accommodation support up to โ‚ฌ100.
  • Tuition fee coverage.
  • Research budget.
  • Travel tickets for language courses in Cape Coast or Lomรฉ.
  • Travel tickets to the country of specialization.
  • Round-trip ticket to Germany.
  • Return ticket to the home country upon program completion.
  • Personal laptop on loan for the duration of the program.

How long does this opportunity last?

The program lasts 28 months, including:

  • 4 months of language proficiency training.
  • 24 months of masterโ€™s degree coursework and research.
