Tell Me About The Code For Africa AI Ethics Fellowship:

The AI Ethics Fellowship, offered by Code for Africa (CfA) through the Digitalise Youth consortium, provides a unique opportunity for mid-career professionals in the Sahel and neighboring countries in West and East Africa. This fellowship focuses on fostering the ethical adoption of AI tools in governance and civic technology, with an emphasis on safeguarding individual rights. Fellows will be involved in developing research and policy recommendations, analyzing regional and global regulations, and advocating for inclusive AI policies. Participants will work closely with various partners, including digital rights organizations, think tanks, and experts in democratic governance, while receiving strategic resources and support.

Who can Apply for the Code For Africa AI Ethics Fellowship?

We seek policy experts and ethicists with:

  • Governance Expertise โ€“ Background in policy development, regulatory compliance, or digital rights related to technology, data or innovation.
  • Policy Drafting โ€“ Skill in creating guidelines, legal briefs, or advisory reports.
  • Global Frameworks โ€“ Knowledge of GDPR, OECD AI Principles, or UNESCOโ€™s AI ethics recommendations.
  • Privacy & Security โ€“ Familiarity with data protection laws and human rights considerations.
  • Bias Mitigation โ€“ Experience conducting fairness audits or ethical risk assessments.
  • Technical Collaboration โ€“ Ability to translate ethical principles into actionable technical specs for developers.
  • Advocacy Skills โ€“ Track record of influencing policy or corporate AI practices.
  • Cultural Sensitivity โ€“ Understanding of AIโ€™s socio-cultural impacts on marginalised groups.
  • Experience working with African civil society or multilateral institutions.
  • Fluency in either English/French/Arabic (multilingual candidates preferred).
  • Location: Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, Sudan, Guinea, Benin, Togo, Cameroon, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia.
  • Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to African communities.

How are Applicants Selected?

Applicants are selected based on:

  • Their background in policy drafting, governance expertise, and familiarity with global AI frameworks.
  • Their ability to engage in advocacy, translate ethical principles into actionable technical specifications, and assess the societal impact of AI on marginalized groups.
  • Their experience in collaborating with African civil society or multilateral institutions.

Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, Sudan, Guinea, Benin, Togo, Cameroon, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia.

Where will the Award be Taken?

The fellowship work will take place remotely, with selected fellows receiving support from CfAโ€™s TechLab, DataLab, and AI Sandbox, as well as the Digitalise Youth consortiumโ€™s networks.
