British Council

The British Council is the UK’s international organization for cultural relations and educational opportunities. It has offices and links in over 100 countries across six continents, promoting British culture and the English language. As a multi-faceted institution, it encourages cultural, scientific, technological and educational cooperation of host countries with the United Kingdom.

Its objectives and goals include promoting the English language, promoting scientific and technological researches, exporting the UK’s culture and generally changing the lives of people wherever its influence can be found.

The British Council has afforded many people from low and middle countries access to the vast skills, educational opportunities, career prospects, and a free, open and modern society that the UK parades. The British Council’s network of life-changing programmes and initiatives are very broad. It offers English and examinations in more than 50 countries, running tests such as the IELTS English-language standardized test and the University of Cambridge, ESOL Examinations; It organizes the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), the English for Peace Initiative, Erasmus+, FiveFilms4Freedom, SelectorRadio, Shakespeare Lives, Young Creative Entrepreneur Awards – which seeks to identify and support talented people across the various creative industries.

The British Council’s work in Education seems to be its most outstanding project, in which it has partnered with schools, Institutions, and NGOs to create opportunities for young people. Through these programmes, many young people have been able to develop critical skills to succeed in the global economy.

Scholarships Offered By British Council and Eligibility Criteria

• Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships

Eligibility: Candidates must be permanently resident in an eligible commonwealth country; Be a citizen of an eligible commonwealth country; Upper second class (2:1) or second class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification; Financial neediness.

• Commonwealth Rutherford Fellowship

Eligibility: Highly Skilled and Motivated PhD graduates; Be a citizen of an eligible commonwealth country; Candidates must be permanently resident in an eligible commonwealth; Be ready to commence fellowship at prescribed dates.

• Commonwealth Medical Fellowships

Eligibility: Must have qualified at a Medical School recognized by the World Directory of Medical Schools; Be a citizen of an eligible commonwealth country; Be permanently resident in an eligible CW country; Have qualified as a doctor; Be employed by a hospital affiliated to the Medical School where you have the academic appointment;

• Commonwealth Professional Fellowships

Eligibility: Be a citizen of an eligible CW country; Be permanently resident in an eligible CW country; Have at least five years’ full-time or equivalent part-time relevant work experience in a profession related to the subject of fellowship programme; Be employed at the time of application; Not have undertaken a commonwealth professional fellowship within the last five years; Be available to start their fellowship within prescribed dates.

• Commonwealth Shared Scholarships

Eligibility: Be a citizen of an eligible CW country; Be available to start your academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year; Hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) or a second class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification; Be unable to afford study in the UK without this scholarship; Not have studied or worked for one (academic) year or more in a high-income country; Be permanently resident in an eligible commonwealth country.
