The Commonwealth countries are made up of 53 independent and sovereign states. It is a voluntary organization made up of nearly all of the former territories of the British Empire. The member countries span Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe and the Pacific, and are amongst the world’s largest, smallest, richest and poorest countries. The Commonwealth is home to 2.4 billion citizens and 60% of these are under the age of 30. Over the years, the Commonwealth has become a network of more than 80 intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, civil society, cultural and professional organizations.
