Korean Scholarships for International Students

South Korea is Asia’s fourth largest economy, as well as, a constitutional democratic state with a very high standard of living. It is one of the world’s leading international financial centres.

Undergraduate programmes last for four years with an exception of Medicine and Dentistry which last for six years.

Korea has minimum tuition and living costs and international students do not need to pay higher fees. The government has shown great support and deregulations for foreign students in areas like dormitory provisions, part-time jobs, and employment after graduation and scholarships.

Most international students who study in Korean universities take courses offered in English. English language courses are more at the graduate level. Overseas students who want to study in English or Korean languages must show a proof of language proficiency, it is important to check with individual schools for their required language exam scores.

The academic year starts in March, but many universities admit new students twice a year – March (spring semester) and September (autumn). There are two semesters in a year: July – August and December – February. The deadline for March entry is between September and November, while that of September is between May and June. Applicants should print out application forms and send via courier service or apply online, if available.

The purpose of the Global Korean Scholarship is to provide international students with opportunities for advanced learning at the different higher institutions in the Korean Republic. This helps to promote healthy international exchanges in education and foster mutual understanding.

The scholarships are available for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. However, a transfer option is not available for the scholarship.

The total number of candidates to be selected is 870 persons, 170 persons for the undergraduate courses and 700 persons for the postgraduate courses.

Fortunate candidates are advised to take Korean language training courses for a period of one year at any language institution located in the home universities. Candidates exempted are those who have attained a Korean language proficiency score higher than 5 in TOPIK.

For undergraduates

• The announcement is released in September of the year prior to planned studies.
• Candidates are recommended by the Korean Embassy between October and November the same year.
• Results are released in the year of planned studies.
• Candidates’ arrival takes place in late February of the year of planned studies in Korea.

For postgraduate study

• The announcement is released in February of the planned year of study.
• Candidates are recommended by the Korean Embassy between March and April of the same year.
• Results are released in June
• Candidates arrive in late August.

Other Information

Applicants with no English as their first language should take IELTS, TOEFL, or other acceptable English language tests to prove their English proficiency.

Tuition fees per semester range between £1,275 and £3,800 for undergraduates and £1,600 to £4,460 for postgraduates.

Dormitory accommodation is more economical and convenient. Students should decide where they want to live before their arrival.

The cost of living is about £5000.

Foreigners are registered with the National Health Insurance Corporations. Korea is a safe country to live with a minimal record of theft, assault, and thuggery.
