Leadership Fellowship is a programme designed to support a range of activities, studies in specific fields, research, development of organization or initiative, training and reflection to support the fellow’s growth and opportunities for further exploration.

Top Leadership Fellowship for African/International Students

1. Joan Shorenstein Fellowship Programme at Harvard Kennedy School

The Joan Shorenstein Fellowship Programme is designed for journalists, scholars, politicians and policymakers and offers them the time to and resources needed for research, and to write about their findings.

Benefits of the Fellowship

• Fellows are paid a stipend of $30,000 in monthly installments. Living and travel expenses are not included.
• A student research assistant is selected from Harvard Kennedy School to work on paid projects.
• A workstation, computer, phone, a Harvard email address and a Harvard ID card are provided for the successful applicant.

Eligibility Criteria

• Applicants must be journalists, scholars, politicians or policymakers to qualify.
• Applicants should not have participated in another fellowship within the two years prior to the semester at hand.
• They must be fluent in English and non-English speakers must provide TOEFL or IELTS scores.

Busy professionals are offered the time to think, research and write on central issues through this fellowship.

2. LEAP Africa iLEAD Fellowship Programme for National Youth Service Corps Members in Lagos, Nigeria

The iLEAD programme is a LEAP Africa’s platform designed to equip teachers and teenagers with the leadership, life and employability skills required to transition effectively in the society. The programme runs for a period of one academic year and requires volunteers and teachers who would help in facilitating and coordinating the programme.

Eligibility Criteria

• Volunteers must be serving corps members.

3. Structural Transformation of African Agriculture and Rural Spaces (STAARS) Fellowship for Early-Career African Researchers (fully-funded)

The STAARS Fellowship Programme announces a call for concept proposals from African researchers seeking to become STAARS fellows in 2020.

Benefit

• The fellowship covers all expenses.
• Fellows will be paired with mentors whom they would jointly author a paper.
• PIM will facilitate fellows’ participation in scientific and policy conferences.

Eligibility Criteria

• Early-career African researchers (fresh PhD students are more preferable).
• Qualified female researchers are encouraged to apply.
• Fellows must be African nationals, based and working in Africa.

Prospective STAARS fellows would be required to develop proposals.

4. The council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA)calls for African Academic Diaspora visiting Fellowships

The CODESRIA is glad to invite joint proposals from African academics in the Diaspora and universities in Africa for vising fellows to African universities. The programme seeks to mobilize the African academics in the Diaspora to support their counterparts in the African universities. The visitation will range from 2 weeks to three months.

Eligibility Criteria

• African-born academics in the diaspora, especially, the North America and Europe.
• African scholars living within the continent and interested in visiting other countries other than their home country are eligible to apply.
• Host universities should be located in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and South Africa.

Fully-funded Fellowships around the World

1. 2020 Centre on Philanthropy and Civil Society Emerging Leaders International Fellows Programme in USA (fully-funded)

The fellowship programme is designed to provide leadership training through seminars with third-sector practitioners, research-based and application of the comparative framework.

The award is a full fellowship that covers tuition fees, accommodation, meal allowance, medical insurance, local travel, programme materials, among others.

Eligibility Criteria

Fellows must have:

• College or university degree.
• Nationality from anywhere around the globe.
• Strong ability to read, write and conduct research in English at a postgraduate level.
• Ability to implement research recommendations.
• Strong institutional base at a community foundation.

2. Eisenhower Fellowships’ Women’s Leadership Programme (fully-funded)

The programme seeks talented women leaders with proven track records of achievement to join its network of over 1,600 fellows. The fellow must be willing to engage in constructive projects and initiatives, as well as, make a meaningful change in the world.

The programme, in addition, runs for six weeks. The goal is to deepen the fellow’s leadership skills, connect innovative fellows with like-minded colleagues and foster sustainable collaborations. Women from all fields, irrespective of the nationality are encouraged to apply.
