The program is open to students pursuing or interested in biology and related sciences, particularly those considering graduate studies. Participants work full-time in research labs, gain hands-on research skills, and expand their global network. Furthermore, the benefits include: Accommodation is provided near the Hongo Campus by UTokyo, though some labs may require commuting by train. A stipend of 270,000 JPY is included, allowing participants to budget for food and personal travel during their stay in Japan. Economy-class airfare to Tokyo or round-trip train tickets for domestic students are provided, with the most economical route arranged by the program office. Changes for personal reasons require reimbursement of initial airfare costs to the University of Tokyo. Students must arrange their own private health and travel insurance, as the Amgen Foundation and UTokyo do not provide this.
