In order to ensure that critical research is seen by a larger audience, this remote fellowship aims to familiarize graduate students with the theoretical and practical aspects of presenting academic knowledge to the public. Tell Me About the Award: The APSA Public Scholarship Program is a remote fellowship that introduces political science graduate students to the intellectual and practical aspects of presenting academic scholarship to the public. During the fellowship period, fellows focus on producing public-facing summaries of political science research. This involves communicating with journal editors and authors under the supervision of APSA staff. This work is shared via APSA’s blog, politicalsciencenow.com, as well as on APSA social media accounts. Some of fellows’ work will also be published in APSA member magazine, Political Science Today. The Public Scholarship Program was created in collaboration with the APSA Presidential Task Force for New Partnerships. Recent articles covered include work on politicians’ use of misinformation to bolster political support, and the effects of hurricanes on attitudes about climate change. We welcome doctoral students in political science who have completed their first year of graduate work by the beginning of the fellowship period. Among the criteria for selection are applicant’s interests and investment in public scholarship, as well as ability to write for a general audience. Anyone with interest in public scholarship is encouraged to apply, whether or not that interest is explicit in their existing work. Which Countries are Eligible? All nationalities How Many Awards? Not specified What is the Benefit of Award? Stipend: Fellows receive a $2,000 stipend to support their work throughout the fellowship period. Training: The fellowship includes a Public Scholarship workshop featuring training by APSA staff, opportunities to workshop public scholarship, and presentations from experts in the field. How Long Will the Award Last? 12 months How to Apply: Application Materials CV (2 pages max): Include contact information, academic department, relevant employment and service history, and academic accomplishments. List any published work in popular magazines, newspapers, or blogs, in addition to scholarly publications. Statement of Interest (1 page single-spaced): Clearly outline your interest in public scholarship and how you envision contributing to the program. Writing Sample (3 single-spaced pages max): Provide a sample of writing about political science for a public audience. This can be previously published work in popular outlets or a new summary of a recent APSR article (maximum 600 words).
